The Governors of The Elms are delighted to announce the appointment of Chris Hattam as Headmaster of The Elms, taking over from Alastair Thomas in January 2018.
Chris has been at Sedbergh School, near Kendal in Cumbria for thirteen years teaching Philosophy and Religious Studies alongside coaching rugby, cricket and hockey. Sedbergh is a co-ed boarding school, split into Prep from nursery to 13, and Senior from 13 to 18. For the last seven years, Chris has been a senior school Housemaster caring for the academic and pastoral needs of sixty boys.
He has been the lead on Safeguarding during his time at Sedbergh and as such has worked closely with Sedbergh Prep School delivering lessons and being involved in their successful marketing programme.
Before being appointed to Sedbergh School Chris worked as a Probation Officer with Young Offenders, with disadvantaged young people and with children suffering disability. He was at Edinburgh University, having boarded at Sherborne School and Farleigh Prep School, near Andover.
He is married to Jess with three children - Rosie twelve, Charlie ten and Eliza eight, not to mention three spaniels. His passion for the rural life started as a child and he enjoys a broad range of activities that will chime with the traditional country life at The Elms.
The appointment of Chris is the result of a vigorous multi-stage process that started off with 47 applicants for the job. The Governors were unanimous in choosing Chris. We believe that he will maintain all that is good about The Elms while recognising what will need to evolve. He had fallen for our unique ethos of an extended family of girls and boys from 3-13 (and the staff that are dedicated to looking after them) which encourages and nurtures individuals to flourish.
