The well equipped Riding Department at The Elms welcomes all children keen to experience the enjoyment of riding and caring for ponies. It offers an introduction to beginners as well as discipline-specific tuition for the more progressive and competitive children.
Facilities include a 20 box stable yard, large outdoor school, cross country course and full set of show jumps. The local area offers excellent hacking along quiet lanes and through beautiful open countryside.
Adopting professional standards within a fun and relaxed environment, Harriet Baird, Equestrian Manager, promotes an all round ‘hands-on’ understanding of pony care and riding techniques. We encourage the children to help enthusiastically and get involved in the stable yard, whenever their timetable allows.
Pupils can bring their own ponies to school ‘to board’ weekly or termly, a variety of livery and working livery options can be tailored to suit.
As a registered Pony Club Centre, we adopt the structure of Proficiency and Achievement Badges, dovetailing well with pupils’ existing Pony Club Branch membership. It offers those without their own pony the same inclusivity and opportunities to ride and compete as those who are pony owners. We are increasingly fostering links with local branches, by hiring out our facilities and sharing celebrity talks.
The school regularly enters successful teams in National Schools Equestrian Association competitions and Pony Club Triathlons and Tetrathlons. Weekly training for swimming, running and shooting, in addition to the riding, produces excellent results for both boys and girls and generates an exceptionally cohesive team spirit.
Once children have reached a suitable level of competence, opportunities may arise during the winter for those who are keen to venture out on trail hunting expeditions, accompanied by experienced mounted staff and helpers. These trips have traditionally been memorable highlights of Elms' extra curricular life!
